Every Human Factors and Ergonomics professional faces a common challenge: guiding groups through evaluation and redesign while navigating the real-world complexities of the workplace. We ask ourselves: What do I do when I have expertise and a goal, but the situation I’m working in won’t simply yield to a technically correct solution?

While we apply our skills in different ways, we are all practitioners of participatory leadership. We know Participatory Ergonomics works when it actively involves frontline workers and supervisors in identifying hazards and shaping solutions. But how do we design our meetings to genuinely listen to the voice of the worker, foster real collaboration, and result in actionable power to act?

Traditional, structured problem-solving frameworks have been our go-to tools. Yet, if you have ever felt constrained by system pressures—or watched workers improvise an operational workaround that rivals anything we could engineer—you have experienced the reality of work-as-done complexity.

Join us for an upcoming workshop tailored specifically for ergonomic and human factors practitioners.

Chris Corrigan is a facilitator, teacher and consultant based on Bowen Island, British Columbia. For more than 25 years, he has worked with organizations and communities facing complex challenges where expertise alone is not enough to determine what to do. His work focuses on participatory leadership, complexity-informed practice, and designing conversations that help people make sense of their situations and act together. He has worked extensively with leaders, practitioners and organizations across Canada and internationally, helping them strengthen their capacity to work with uncertainty, learn from experience, and turn diverse knowledge into practical action.

You are invited to join the Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE) for a social event following the CRE-MSD conference. This is a great opportunity for members to socialize, learn about each other's professions, talk about the conference, and connect with peers.

The Future of Injury Prevention: Dovetailing Applied Field Research and Innovation Infrastructure for Safer Workplaces

Learn about initiatives from the Canadian Institute for Safety, Wellness, and Performance (CISWP) to prevent injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. These initiatives address complex health and safety challenges through:

Field research, including mobile labs and wearable sensors
The development of critical databases for discovery and decision making
A rapid response system to look at current and emerging risks
Multidisciplinary labs to translate research into solutions

Two initiatives will be highlighted: Database of Occupation-Specific Exposures (DOSE) and Multivariate Occupation-Specific Anthropometric (MOSAIC).

Vehicle Ergonomics: Driving and Working Safely from Your Mobile Office

Learn practical strategies for creating a safe and comfortable mobile workspace. The presentation will look how to effectively work in your vehicle, avoid common ergonomic pitfalls, and make simple adjustments to improve your comfort while driving and working.
